We Left First

Leaving first is an act of faith. For the people beginning an interstellar journey, the commitment is measured in years of life as well as distance. They are setting out towards a future they cannot reach quickly, trusting that the voyage itself will help create something worth the cost. Their departure represents the greatest leap humanity is then capable of making.

The world they leave behind does not pause to preserve that achievement. Knowledge grows. Capabilities improve. A journey made possible by one generation's most advanced technology may still be underway when another generation discovers a faster way to travel. The distance ahead remains vast, but the meaning of being first begins to change while the original travellers are still crossing it.

For those aboard, progress elsewhere becomes a complicated kind of news. The success of the civilisation they came from may undermine the role that gave their sacrifice its purpose. If later travellers can arrive before them, the destination they imagined opening to humanity may already belong to another stage of its history. They can continue moving forwards while becoming, in another sense, people left behind.

The question reaches beyond recognition. An interstellar commitment shapes entire lives around an arrival still to come. What happens when that arrival no longer means what people agreed to pursue? The travellers must confront a future that has developed without waiting for them, and find a way to understand their place within an undertaking whose historical importance may be changing faster than their course.

We Left First is a story about pioneers, progress and the human cost of distance. It asks whether an extraordinary journey retains its meaning when someone else reaches its destination sooner. The people who took the first step have not stopped travelling. They must discover what still makes that step matter in a world that has learned how to overtake them.
