The House That Hated Children

A story by Sonny Lanning

You can come in, but only if you're good

A home should be the place where a family can stop being afraid. For Jamie Dobson, that promise is part of what it means to protect his children: somewhere familiar, somewhere secure, somewhere the dangers of the world can be kept outside. When something begins to feel wrong with the house itself, the boundary he relies on starts to collapse.

Its hostility appears to have a particular focus. The children are the ones Jamie most needs to keep safe, and the ones the house seems least willing to accommodate. Ordinary rooms become threatening. Familiar surroundings offer less reassurance with every reason to doubt them. The danger is intimate, occupying the spaces in which the family is supposed to be able to live without constant vigilance.

For a parent, recognising a threat is only the beginning. Jamie must decide how to respond to something that does not fit the dangers he knows how to explain. Taking his children's safety seriously means confronting the possibility that the building around them has become an active part of what they fear. Protecting them cannot depend on pretending that familiarity still means security.

The house changes the meaning of everyday family life. Rooms, thresholds and the idea of being at home acquire a different weight when the place itself seems unwilling to welcome those inside it. Jamie's responsibility remains clear, even while the nature of the threat does not. He must put his children first in circumstances that make the simplest promise of parenthood painfully difficult to keep.

The House That Hated Children turns the comfort of a family home into the source of a parent's deepest fear. As Jamie tries to understand what his family is facing, he must confront a danger that cannot be left at the door—because the door, and everything beyond it, may already belong to the thing that wants them gone.
