For centuries, the Egyptian Labyrinth was considered one of the greatest wonders of the ancient world. Described by the Greek historian Herodotus as a vast complex of chambers and passages, it was said to rival even the pyramids in magnificence. Yet almost nothing of it survives. Its reputation belongs to the historical record; its greatest secrets may still lie beneath the ruins.

When archaeologist Dr Cassius Brown encounters fragments of a remarkable ancient bronze mechanism, he begins to suspect that the Labyrinth's importance was never simply its size. Working alongside Thalia Markou, a specialist in ancient engineering, Cassius discovers parts of an ingenious mechanical model: a device capable of revealing a route through a structure that has defeated explorers for more than two thousand years.

Understanding what the fragments were built to do becomes as important as identifying where they came from. A mechanism can preserve knowledge differently from a written account, carrying instructions in the relationship between its parts. Cassius and Thalia must recover that relationship if they are to follow the route it appears to describe, and distinguish an extraordinary possibility from something they can actually use.
