Good Virus

A story by Sonny Lanning

Everyone Wants To Catch It

Another respiratory virus begins spreading around the world. This time, its most striking effects are welcome. Cancer rates fall. Autoimmune disease retreats. Degenerative conditions slow, and some inherited disorders improve. A mild infection seems capable of repairing damage medicine has struggled to treat. For people living with illness, the promise is immediate and personal. Avoiding infection starts to look like missing an opportunity.

Humanity changes its behaviour accordingly. People seek the virus out. What would once have triggered fear becomes something to hope for, recommend and share. The benefits are real enough to make caution difficult to defend. A warning about consequences that have not yet appeared must compete with bodies that are already healing and families who have been given back possibilities they thought were lost.

Evolutionary geneticist Sofia Malik sees a cost within that success. The virus is making human biology more alike. Differences that can look inconvenient or harmful in an individual also form part of the variety on which a species depends. A population becoming healthier in the same way may also be acquiring the same weaknesses. The miracle and the vulnerability are developing together.

Years later, a second pathogen finds the opening that the first has created. Humanity must confront a danger made possible by a treatment that genuinely worked. The people who refused the Good Virus, once separated from the benefits everyone else wanted, may now carry biological differences essential to the survival of those who accepted it.

Good Virus follows the collision between individual healing and the long uncertainties of evolution. Sofia's warning asks how a world relieved of suffering can recognise a risk concealed inside its relief. When improvement becomes almost universal, the future may depend on precisely the variation that improvement has begun to remove.
