Ghost at Your Shoulder

A story by Sonny Lanning

You're going to be a very bad boy

Rachel works in safeguarding. Recognising danger and trying to prevent harm are already part of her life. After a near-fatal accident, that responsibility acquires a form she cannot explain: silent ghosts standing beside living people. Each represents someone whose future death the person beside them will help bring about. Rachel can see a consequence before the chain leading to it has finished unfolding.

The ghosts do not identify murderers. Their presence does not establish intention, or even guilt. A person can contribute to a death without wanting it, understanding it, or knowing that a connection exists. For Rachel, that distinction matters. Treating everyone she sees as dangerous would turn a warning about consequences into a judgement the warning itself cannot support.

Nor are the futures fixed. Intervention can change them, offering the possibility that seeing a ghost might allow her to save a life. But an action taken to prevent harm also has consequences. A warning, a choice or an attempt to protect someone may become part of the very sequence she hoped to interrupt. Knowing that a death is possible does not mean knowing how to stop it.

Rachel must decide how much responsibility a person can carry for events that have not happened yet. She cannot easily turn away, yet acting with certainty she does not possess may make things worse. Her professional instinct to protect is drawn into a world where outcomes are visible but the route towards them remains painfully incomplete.

Then she sees a ghost beside herself. Ghost at Your Shoulder is a supernatural thriller about care, causation and the limits of foresight. For Rachel, the question is no longer simply whether she can prevent other people's harm. It is how to recognise her own place in a future she is already trying to change.
