140 Characters
Choose your words very carefully
People cannot travel through time. Neither can objects. Information, however, can make the journey. After decades of research, humanity has built a machine capable of sending one message exactly twenty years into the past. The limit is absolute: 140 characters, one transmission, no opportunity to explain what the recipient gets wrong. The future must fit inside a few carefully chosen words.
At first, the possibilities seem overwhelmingly hopeful. Warn the world about a war. Stop a pandemic before it spreads. Reveal a discovery years ahead of its time. Give an earlier generation the knowledge or resources to avoid suffering that everyone in the present has already witnessed. There is no shortage of events people would change, or of people certain that their choice should come first.
Agreement is another matter. Governments, scientists and the public must weigh lives against lives, certainty against opportunity, and the disasters they understand against consequences they cannot predict. A warning that makes perfect sense now may mean almost nothing twenty years earlier. A message precise enough to act upon may leave no room to explain why anyone should believe it.
Every proposed answer reveals a different idea of what humanity owes itself. Is the greatest responsibility to prevent a known tragedy, or to create a future that can prevent many more? Who gets to decide which losses can remain? And how much can anyone change without understanding what those changes will replace?
Then someone asks the question that all the planning has left unresolved. If this message will be sent into a past they have already lived through, where is it? Why has nobody received it? Before humanity can choose its words, it may have to discover what that silence means.
